In August 2018, YES Network Namibia hosted one of its most impactful events to date a Scientific Writing Workshop held at the Ministry of Mines and Energy Auditorium in Windhoek. The workshop brought together over 70 students, graduates, and early-career geoscientists, creating a rare and much-needed space for young Namibians to grow their academic and professional writing skills.
The goal was clear: to empower the next generation of researchers with the tools they need to communicate their science effectively. Whether writing a master’s thesis, applying for a scholarship, or preparing a journal article, strong writing is essential and often overlooked.
With expert facilitators from the Geological Survey of Namibia, the University of Namibia, and the Namibia University of Science and Technology, participants were guided through a range of key topics including plagiarism awareness, data presentation, methodology, and publication strategies. There was also a special session led by young PhD holders, offering both practical advice and inspiration.
More than just a workshop, the event became a launchpad for confidence, clarity, and collaboration. Participants left feeling better equipped not only to write but to research, apply, and publish with purpose.
This workshop remains one of our proudest moments, and a reminder that with the right support, young scientists can rise to meet any challenge.
We contributed to the Women in Geoscience Conference as part of the organizing team and through member presentations. The event celebrated and amplified the voices of women shaping the future of earth sciences in Namibia and beyond.
